About Oz Lotto
Oz Lotto is Australia's national Tuesday night lottery, operated by The Lott. Drawn every Tuesday at approximately 8:30pm AEST, it offers a guaranteed minimum Division 1 prize pool of $4 Million (increased from $2M in early 2026). Oz Lotto's biggest-ever jackpot was $112 million in November 2012, shared by four winners.
How Oz Lotto Works
Oz Lotto uses a 7-from-47 format (changed from 7/45 in May 2022):
- 7 winning numbers drawn from a barrel of 47 balls (numbered 1–47)
- 3 supplementary numbers drawn from the remaining 40 balls
- 7 prize divisions determining winners
To win Division 1, you must match all 7 main numbers. Supplementary numbers help determine winners in Divisions 2, 4, and 7. The total number of Division 1 combinations is C(47,7) = 62,891,499.
A standard game costs $1.40. Tickets are available from licensed retailers and online through The Lott.

The May 2022 Format Change
In May 2022, Oz Lotto's format changed from 7-from-45 to 7-from-47. This change increased the Division 1 odds from 1 in 45,379,620 to 1 in 62,891,499, making the top prize harder to win. The result: larger and more frequent jackpot rollovers, leading to bigger headline prizes. The additional two balls added 17.5 million more possible combinations, which is why Oz Lotto jackpots now regularly surpass $20 million before being won.
In early 2026, the minimum Division 1 guarantee was also increased from $2 million to $4 million, aligning it more closely with TattsLotto's guaranteed pool.

Notable Oz Lotto Jackpots
- $112 Million (November 2012) — Oz Lotto's all-time record; shared by 4 winners (~$28M each)

Oz Lotto vs Powerball
Oz Lotto's Division 1 odds of 1 in 62.9 million are significantly better than Powerball's 1 in 134.5 million — roughly twice as easy to win. However, Powerball's harder odds generate larger rollovers and bigger jackpots. For players seeking big prizes with comparatively better odds, Oz Lotto offers a compelling alternative. Oz Lotto also costs slightly more per game ($1.40 vs $1.35 for Powerball), and its Division 2 prizes tend to be higher on average. Read our detailed comparison: Powerball vs Oz Lotto.
