About Powerball Australia
Powerball is Australia's biggest and richest lottery game, operated by The Lott. Drawn every Thursday at approximately 8:30pm AEST, Powerball holds the record for Australia's largest-ever lottery jackpot — $200 million, won by a single entry in February 2024. The game's extremely long odds (1 in 134,490,400 for Division 1) mean the jackpot frequently rolls over for weeks, creating the massive prize pools that make national headlines.
How Powerball Works
Powerball uses a dual-barrel system that creates much harder odds than single-barrel games:
- 7 winning numbers are drawn from a barrel of 35 balls (numbered 1–35)
- 1 Powerball number is drawn from a separate barrel of 20 balls (numbered 1–20)
- 9 prize divisions — the most of any Australian lottery game
To win Division 1, you must match all 7 main numbers AND the Powerball. The total number of possible combinations is C(35,7) × 20 = 134,490,400.
A standard Powerball game costs $1.35. Tickets close at 7:30pm AEST on draw night and are available from licensed retailers and online through The Lott.
Prize Division Breakdown
| Division | Match | Typical Prize | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7 + Powerball | $3M+ (jackpots) | 1 in 134,490,400 |
| 2 | 7 main numbers | $100K–$200K | 1 in 7,078,443 |
| 3 | 6 + Powerball | $5,000–$10,000 | 1 in 686,176 |
| 4 | 6 main numbers | $400–$600 | 1 in 36,115 |
| 5 | 5 + Powerball | $150–$200 | 1 in 16,943 |
| 6 | 4 + Powerball | $70–$100 | 1 in 1,173 |
| 7 | 5 main numbers | $40–$60 | 1 in 892 |
| 8 | 3 + Powerball | $15–$20 | 1 in 188 |
| 9 | 2 + Powerball | $10–$12 | 1 in 66 |
The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are approximately 1 in 44, making it more likely to win something than TattsLotto (1 in 85), despite having much harder Division 1 odds.
Record Australian Powerball Jackpots
Powerball dominates Australia's biggest-ever lottery wins:
- $200 Million (February 2024) — Won by a single entry, the largest lottery prize in Australian history
- $160 Million (October 2022) — Won by a single ticket holder
- $150 Million (May 2024) — The largest individual prize won by a single person
- $150 Million (September 2019) — Shared by three winners ($50M each)
- $110 Million (July 2019) — Shared by three winners
The 2018 format change (from 6/40 to 7/35 + PB/20) made Division 1 significantly harder to win, which is precisely why jackpots now regularly exceed $50 million and occasionally reach nine-figure amounts.
When to Play Powerball
Based on our analysis of historical jackpot patterns, Powerball jackpots above $50M occur roughly every 8–10 weeks. The expected value per ticket increases significantly with larger jackpots. While the game is always random, the times when jackpots exceed $100M represent the mathematically most interesting draws in terms of expected return per dollar spent. Our Powerball analytics dashboard tracks current and historical jackpot sizes to help you identify these high-value draw opportunities.
Buying Powerball Tickets
Powerball tickets are available from licensed retailers and online through The Lott. Entries close at approximately 7:25pm AEST each Thursday. A standard game costs $1.35, and you can also enter via System entries (covering more number combinations) or syndicates (shared entries at lower cost per player). For more on syndicates, read our syndicate guide.
Powerball Strategy Considerations
Since Powerball draws from two separate barrels, your strategy should account for both. Our Powerball Analytics page tracks frequency data separately for main numbers (1–35) and the Powerball (1–20). Key observations from our data:
- Main numbers and Powerball numbers are completely independent — patterns in one barrel don't affect the other
- Most winning combinations contain a mix of odd and even main numbers
- The Powerball number distribution is remarkably even across all 20 options over the full dataset
- Choosing less popular main numbers (above 31) can reduce the likelihood of sharing a Division 1 prize
Our number generator accounts for both barrels and offers five strategies — Hot, Cold, Balanced, Weighted, and Random. For a detailed comparison with Oz Lotto, read our Powerball vs Oz Lotto guide.
